The park

The park was founded in the 1860s by Christ's Hospital of Abingdon who still own and run the park.  You can find more on the history here.

The park is approximately 300 by 200m and has trees and shrubs rather than flower beds along with lawn areas.  Many of the trees a very old and beautiful.  It is laid out with shady, tree-lined paths around the edge and and a large open play area in the in the middle.  There are many benches around the park for you to relax and these can be found on our benches page.

Interesting features

The park is dominated by a statue of Prince Albert on a 15m high column.  The statue was completed in 1865.

There is a curious small hexagonal building at the south-east corner of the site. This is Conduit House and was built over a natural spring and the water conveyed to Ock Street by a conduit running along what is now called Conduit Road.  The water was for the people of Ock street at a time when other water was unfit to drink.  It is not known when the Conduit House was built but it was certainly before 1550 and was in use until 1875.

The Abingdon Bowling Club is based in the park and was set up in 1913.

The Abingdon Lawn Tennis Club had courts in the park from 1914 before moving to their current location in South Abingdon in the 1980s.
